The CEO of Shopify, Tobi Lutke, has told employees that before they can ask to hire more people, they must first prove that the work cannot be done using new smart technology. In a memo, he explained that there is a "fundamental expectation" for everyone at the company to use these tools in their daily work, as he believes it can multiply productivity. This new approach to hiring comes as Shopify and other tech companies are investing heavily in this technology while also cutting jobs. The company's total number of employees has recently decreased, and its finance chief said they can keep the headcount "relatively flat" by using technology more. The use of these tools will also be part of employee performance reviews.
Prove Tech Can't Do It
Shopify now requires employees to show that new technology can't do a job before they can hire someone.
