A new European law to set rules for how smart technology is made and used will come into effect on August 1, 2024. The goal is to make sure this technology is trustworthy and respects people's rights. The law uses a risk-based system. The most dangerous technology, such as systems that unfairly score people or manipulate their behavior, will be banned starting February 1, 2025. Another category is for "high-risk" technology, like systems used for hiring or processing asylum applications, which will have to meet strict safety and fairness rules. Most of these high-risk systems will need to follow the new rules by August 1, 2026. This phased approach gives organizations time to check their technology and make sure they are following the law.
